Planning & Pitching a new TV Channel – by Josh Pugh

One of our final Year 11 projects in Media is to plan and pitch a new TV Channel – this is normally a group project we undertake in school. However because of the challenges surrounding coronavirus, and lockdown Josh Pugh was forced to work from home. This situation gave him the opportunity to demonstrate how resourceful and resilient a media student can be with the correct motivation – and in particular he had the support of his classmate Theo to share and develop ideas with, which is at the core of this collaborative unit.

I have included a selection of his planning and pre-production work – as well as his final TV advert at the bottom of this page.

The Client Brief

Josh began his initial planning stages with a Mind map, Moodboard and SWOT analysis – this was all shared with other students for discussion and development:

Mind map

“Initially I came up with four Genre concepts, as shown on the mind map on the previous slide.

Following conversations with my class mates, my teacher and my family I decided to proceed with the All 4 Sport channel concept.

I chose this idea because:

•It fits well with current audience profile for Channel 4

•Would genuinely extend the Channel 4’s current provision

•Great opportunities for commercial links with big sponsors, as shown on You Tube by videos being sponsored by brands like Red Bull”

SWOT analysis

Josh next summarised the main features of his ideas:

All 4 Sports:

  • Proven concept as shown by wide provision and interest on YouTube
  • Would widen Channel 4’s genre
  • Good connection to Channel 4’s largest audience of male (65%) and young viewers [1]
  • Some sports are performed in a specific place meaning that it wouldn’t be limited to the UK and there is a greater diversty of athletes
  • An All 4 Sports app
  • Big sponsors

This included developing an audience profile for potential viewers:

Next came the opportunity to pitch his idea to an audience – this he did via a Teams meeting:

Josh now had a very definite idea for what he had to produce – this meant he could finally begin planning the technical elements of his video.

Josh researched the rules and regulations surrounding video advertising very carefully:

Finally he was able to produce and share his final video advert – the results I think are of a very high standard indeed:

  1. This is hugely impressive, Josh. I am very impressed by the depth of research, preparation and planning that has led to such an effective television advertisement. The finished product is slick and attractive, but it is the detail of your rationale for your recommendation to the Channel 4 team that adds such power to your work. This seems to me – albeit a layman – a fine piece of work in which you have displayed so many skills and such a confident understanding and application of your learning. Well done. Mr Hetherington
