Even though we rely on computers a lot to design film and television sets, there is still a need to have a physical 3D model of a film location -maybe to help lighting designers position their lights, or to help the director and cinematographer plan their shots.
Model building is highly skilled, and to get all the right materials and tools can be expensive.

But on a more basic level you can practice at home using card / paper models that have been printed off from your computer – they usually come pre-decorated, so you don’t have to paint them yourself.
I have just completed one that I downloaded for free online, and I’m really pleased with the results:
Here’s the finished result:

Paper Model building can be a challenging activity for you to undertake at home independently.
I have provided links to several different types of paper building – like that which you might want in a film location. They vary in difficulty. You will build it, then photograph, or video it, as if you were a film director planning a shot (like my finished example – I added a low light source to make it seem creepy)

Step 1: Download and print out the model – light card is best if you have it.
Step 2: Build the model -this may take a couple of hours, depending on difficulty ( My paper mansion took many!)
Step 3: Position it against a white or plain background, and add a light for shadow effects. (you could also try and chroma key in a specialised background – like a green screen effect)
Step 4: Take your photo, and send it to me.
