Free ‘Royalty Free’ Music for your productions

It’s important we understand why we have to use copyright & royalty free music wherever possible in our projects.

The “free” in royaltyfree does not mean there is no cost for the license, but instead refers to being able to freely use the music or image without paying additional royalties to the original artist who made it.

This is different to using a well-known song in a film or advert where we would have to pay the artist or company that own the rights to that song for its use. Using a famous song may appeal to an audience or might be necessary to have in a specific scene or moment in a  film.

But if it’s just background music for a project,and we don’t have time to compose music ourselves, we can use Royalty free music. In reality this usually involves paying a  one off fee to a royalty free company – there are lots on the web. This will often let you download a ‘full’ version, or remove a water mark from an image.

Some Royalty free companies let schools use their clips for free, as a goodwill gesture. However make sure the website is credited for the music in your project.
