Putting a film budget together

Nothing says excitement like a spreadsheet right? maybe not…but they’re useful for organizing your budget.

Most media projects require one – especially a film production.

Once you’ve decided broadly what you think you need for a production, you can put together a first draft list and try and find out rough costs for each. Various organisations can help with this , sites like this will give you some idea of daily actors rates for example: Casting collective

Work out equipment hire, travel costs and props and costume costs and make a note of them.

Putting the budget together in a spreadsheet is a straightforward task – there are even film production budget templates available for you to use. This fantastic website has some examples – making the movie/budget courtesy of John Ott who must take all credit for these resources.
